    Women in Musical Leadership is an advanced three-year conducting program structured as a series of placements with Tapestry Opera, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and over twenty partner organizations across Canada.  The program’s goal is to allow developing conductors to focus solely on conducting so that after three years, they emerge ready for regular professional engagements.

    Conductors are given practical opportunities to assist, observe, conduct, build professional experience, and expand their networks with a range of organizations in symphonic, chamber, operatic, and contemporary repertoire. Recent opportunities for WML conductors include working with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Gustavo Gimeno in our annual masterclass, assisting mainstage productions with Vancouver Opera (Carmen), Manitoba Opera (L’Elisir d’Amore), and Pacific Opera Victoria (La Clemenza di Tito), and conducting full orchestral programs with the Calgary Philharmonic, Kamloops Symphony, and more.

    Conductors are provided mentorship through a Conducting Advisory Council (comprising leading conductors in the field), and work regularly with Key Mentors JoAnn Falletta, Sarah Ioannides, Tania Miller, Rosemary Thomson, and Karen Kamensek, who help guide conductors through their time in the program.

    How to apply

    Women in Musical Leadership is for self-identified female and non-binary conductors who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Generally, applicants will have completed advanced studies (or equivalent experience) in a primary instrument, have some previous conducting training and experience, and demonstrate readiness for professional opportunities and development. Applicants should be ready to take advantage of all types of conducting placements, including orchestral, opera, and new music – expertise in all areas is not necessary, but readiness to learn on the job is required.

    The Advancement Officer will play a key role in building the organization’s sustainability through a major capital campaign, the construction of a new venue, and the creation of new works of opera. We are looking for someone with 3-plus years of development/fundraising experience with a history of solid writing, working with granting bodies, working in the non-profit and development sector and some understanding of CRMs. This role reports to the Director of Advancement and would work closely with the entire Tapestry team to ensure clear communication with donors, funders and audiences and a well-supported Advancement department.

    Applications are now closed

    New Opera 101 is a new opera masterclass intensive for emerging singers and collaborative pianists, focusing on encouraging original artistry in interpreting original Canadian works.

    Participants are assigned contemporary Canadian repertoire, curated from the newly created Canadian Opera Resource. Singers and pianists will prepare and refine repertoire, expertly coached by leading interpreters of new works in three days of masterclasses.

    The participating performers will then showcase their work in a concert performance, Songbook XII, headlined by soprano, Teiya Kasahara and pianist, David Eliakis, who will be leading this year’s New Opera 101 masterclasses along with Michael Hidetoshi Mori, Tapestry Opera’s Artistic and General Director.

    2023 MASTER CLINICIANS

    Soprano Teiya Kasahara 笠原 貞野 (they/them) has been heralded as “a force of nature” (Toronto Star), a “commanding presence” (Theatre Reviewer),  and “an artist with extraordinary things to say” (The Globe and Mail). Teiya comes from a background of nearly 20 years of singing both traditional and contemporary operatic roles across North America and Europe. Their recent original work The Queen In Me has received international acclaim and recently sold out its world premiere run at the Canadian Opera Company. Teiya’s career spans numerous international appearances as well as repeat local appearances at the Canadian Opera Company, Nightwood Theatre, and Theatre Gargantua. They are a co-founder of Amplified Opera.

    Pianist David Eliakis (he/him) is a longtime collaborator of Kasahara and has contributed to the development and performance of The Queen in Me as well as in recital. His collaborations include some of the country’s greatest singers: Isabel Bayrakdarian, Ben Heppner, Richard Margison, and Measha Brueggergosman. David was also for many years the curator, host, and pianist for Against the Grain’s Opera Pub and music directed their last tour of La Bohème. David is on the faculty at the Royal Conservatory of Music.

    Michael Hidetoshi Mori (he/him) is a stage director and the Artistic and General Director of Tapestry Opera. Most recently, his production of R.U.R. a torrent of light, swept the 2022 Dora Mavor Moore Awards, winning in 6 out of 7 opera categories including Outstanding Production and Outstanding Director. In Canada and the US, Michael has directed traditional and contemporary opera, specializing in developing and premiering new works, often site-specific in nature.

  • Executive Director – Parental Leave Contract

    We’re looking for a driven, organized Executive Director for a one-year parental leave contract!

    For the purposes of Parental Leave, this contract position reports to General Director Michael Mori, working collaboratively to determine strategic priorities. Primary responsibilities include managing full- and part-time staff (5FT, 1PT, & Bookkeeper) and deadlines, overseeing staged and digital productions and special programs, managing annual and day-to-day finances, working with the board of directors including participation on various committees and preparing board of director meetings, and in general managing the heck out of the organization. The Executive Director position includes hands-on work, with concentrated activity in finance, government grants, and events. This position will require working from the Tapestry Opera office and Ernest Balmer Studio, located in Toronto’s Distillery Historic District as well as being onsite for our productions, with some flexibility for working from home.

  • Marketing and Communications Manager

    Tapestry Opera is seeking a talented, savvy communicator to join our team!

    Tapestry Opera is an award-winning independent opera producer known for innovative and progressive practices in developing and producing opera, currently celebrating its 40th anniversary season. Our team consists of FIVE full-time staff and has recently restructured in order to open up a SIXTH position as the company expands. We value collaboration and rigour in developing and producing new works as much as we do collaboration in our administrative work.     Recently, we have dealt with the COVID crisis by guaranteeing all artists fees, pivoting to livestreaming and remote collaboration, and launching a 2020-2021 season “Immune to Cancellation”.

    The Marketing and Communications Manager will develop and execute the communications, marketing, and promotions of Tapestry Opera’s brand, seasons, and individual shows. We are looking for both a strategic thinker and a hands-on executor who is ready to complement the growth of the brand and become a leader in our innovative, dynamic organization. We’re a highly collaborative team, and this role would work closely with the General Director, Executive Director, Manager of External Relations, and the Manager of Patron Engagement to ensure consistency of tone and message across platforms.

    What you will do:

    This is a comprehensive but not exhaustive list, in which there is room for growth in particular areas of interest to the applicant. As with any small organization, additional duties as required, within reason and subject to discussion.

    Communications and Marketing:

    • Develop marketing and communications strategies for all events, productions, video releases
    • Ensure all communications further strategic goals, adhere to overall communications and branding plan, and represent Tapestry in tone and content
    • Ensure a unified image and approach to written communications is used for all Tapestry external correspondence: (newsletters, press releases, information packages, etc.), in collaboration with the Manager of External Relations, Executive Director, and Artistic Director.
    • Develop and oversee Communications Calendar, integrating social media, email, and direct mail appeals, in conjunction with the Patron Engagement Manager, Executive Director, and Artistic Director
    • Research target audiences and collaboratively develop imaging and key messages for Tapestry’s marketing materials. 
    • Write/edit all marketing copy; work with Patron Engagement Manager to develop donor copy
    • Design and create season brochure, production one-pagers, poster copy, with support from the General Director and Executive Director.
    • Manage marketing collateral creation timelines, including video 
    • Develop and execute social media strategy as part of overall Marketing Plan, including daily and weekly posts on all social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc)

    Promotion and Productions:

    • Optimize Tapestry’s SEO and promote YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn channels
    • Manage and track expenses for Tapestry’s annual Marketing budget.
    • Together with Tapestry staff, achieve budget targets for ticket sales and subscriptions
    • Identify advertising opportunities and facilitate listings and ad purchases. 
    • Ensure that marketing materials are documented and/or archived as necessary. 
    • Find  cross promotional partnerships for Tapestry events and arrange for reciprocal marketing where possible (flyer & list exchanges, e-blasts, website presence, etc.). 
    • Act as key contact for Tapestry’s contracted Public Relations firm
    • Assist with coordination of media bookings, media kits and interview requests. 
    • Write news releases either in collaboration with contracted Public Relations firms or on behalf of Tapestry (where outside of the PR firm contract) and assist or take the lead on media distribution and follow-up.
    • Be available for Tapestry shows, as required for press and donor/sponsor liaison.

    Website:

    • Ensure website information is up-to-date and reflective of current organization and activities, including planning ahead for release of new materials and website support for all activities
    • Develop web analytics, maintain necessary codes and api keys to generate custom analytics and use Excel tools to create infographic enhanced reports on web analytics.
